A Fresh Space's Expert Tips
How To Prep For Move Day!
If you’re relocating to Nashville (or moving in Nashville!), you’re likely juggling a hundred details at once. From changing your address to saying goodbye to your current home, move day can sneak up quickly—and without the right prep, it can be chaotic. At A Fresh Space, our move concierge team has helped countless Nashville families and individuals enjoy seamless transitions since 2005. One of the most overlooked—but most critical—phases is getting ready just before the movers arrive.
Whether you’re packing yourself or the movers are handling it all, this guide walks you through exactly what to do so your move day is organized, clear, and stress-free.
Our Expert Tips
Why Move Day Prep Matters
Even if you’ve already decluttered, sorted, and created a moving checklist, move day can still be overwhelming without a clear plan. Professional movers are fast—but they’re not mind-readers. The more prepared you are, the smoother the day will go. This is especially important when you’re using full-service movers or a concierge team like ours at A Fresh Space which is why we make the move prep day a non-negotiable when we are doing move management!
Fresh Space Expert Tips
How To Prep For Move Day!
1. Finalize What’s Staying and What’s Going
Before your movers arrive:
- Tag everything clearly using color-coded tape, sticky notes, or printed labels. For example, red means “leave behind,” green means “move,” and blue means “storage.” This tagging includes things like tv’s, appliances, etc. Or you can use sticky notes that detail what needs to happen.
- Use a room-by-room checklist to ensure nothing gets moved or left by mistake.
- Separate items staying with the house, like manuals, paint samples, keys, or remotes. We recommend creating a bin or using a drawer in the laundry room or kitchen – clearly marked ‘do not pack-leave with house’.
Pro Tip: Create a “Do Not Pack” zone for anything staying or traveling with you—like suitcases, medications, valuables, and pet essentials. These can either be tucked in one space like a closet or bathroom or grouped and tagged.
And be sure you’ve planned for items movers won’t transport like plants, firearms/ammunition, open liquids, etc.

2. Pack a Transition Kit for the Interim Time
If there’s a gap between moving out and getting into your new Nashville home or even if it’s a straight shot, make sure you have:
- Suitcases or bins with clothing, toiletries, chargers, and electronic devices
- Items you’d rather the movers didn’t handle or are personal such as fine jewelry, vital docs like passports, financial items such as checkbooks or cash, etc.
- Essentials box with paper towels, trash bags, snacks, water bottles, cleaning supplies, etc. Be sure to pack anything you can’t live without like your favorite coffee, the book you are in the middle of, or your sound machine.
- Pet and kid kits with food, toys, comfort items, and medications
Think of it like packing for an Air BnB – for as long as the transition takes. Plus keep in mind that if something happens to the moving truck – you want irreplaceable items with you as well as what you need til you can get back on your feet.

3. Prep Your Furniture and Fragile Items
- Disassemble any furniture the movers aren’t handling.
- Remove all items attached to the house that are coming with you – like light fixtures, tv’s, wall hooks, etc.
- Make sure all parts to lamps, decor, furniture, etc. are bagged and labeled.
- Protect floors and doorways, especially in bad weather or older homes – normally the movers will do this but if they don’t – be prepared.
- Label artwork, high value, and fragile items clearly.
- Photograph high-value items for records or insurance (a full video walk through can also be a good ‘just in case’ thing to do).
At A Fresh Space, we handle these steps and more for our clients to ensure nothing gets missed.

4. Make a Game Plan for Move Day
- Do a final walk through to make sure everything is tagged & grouped.
- Make sure kids & pets are accounted for and ideally not on the premises.
- Have snacks, drinks, and cash tips ready for the movers.
- Designate a bathroom for the movers and stock it.
- Charge your phone and minimize other obligations.
- Assign one person as the main contact for the movers.
This kind of clarity helps avoid confusion when boxes and furniture start flying through the door.
5. Communicate With Your Movers
- Confirm arrival time the day before.
- Alert them about the parking situation & access.
- Let them know what’s packed vs. what still needs work.
- Discuss special items like exercise equipment, pool tables, safes, musical instruments, or artwork – this should have been discussed in advance but a reminder is important.
If you’ve hired A Fresh Space, we coordinate all these details directly with your moving company for a hands-off experience.

6. Prepare Your Old House for Handoff
Once the truck is loaded, you’ll want to:
- Do a final walkthrough of closets, basements, attics, and storage spaces. Make sure to check the back of all lower cabinets or that top shelf in a closet – things can get missed! Don’t forget the dishwasher & washer/dryer!
- Collect all keys, garage openers, and manuals for the new owner or agent.
- Take out the trash and leave the home in good condition.
- (Optional) Leave a small welcome note or resource packet—it’s a kind gesture.
